10 Spa Buying Steps to Guide Your Purchase

1. Develop a plan. Once you’ve made the decision to purchase a hot tub, you’ll need to explore exactly what it is you want in a spa and how it will fit into your lifestyle. What will you use it for, and how often? Where will it go? Indoors? Outside? Is electricity easily accessible where you choose to install the spa? Examining your needs will help you make a more informed decision.

2. Determine your budget. It’s important not to skimp and go with a cheaper hot tub model just because it’s less expensive. Typically, it costs less for a reason, and you’ll only wish you had upgraded when you made the initial purchase. That being said, you don’t have to go top of the line to get a model that gives you everything you want. Decide how much you can spend and keep that number in mind as you research brands and talk with dealers. As a good rule of thumb, a well-equipped five-person hot tub costs, on average, around $6,000. Smaller models can be found for as little as $2,000 while deeper models with more jets and additional seats can be $10,000 or more.

3. Do your homework. Not all spas are created equal. There are literally hundreds of hot tub models to choose from, and each has its own unique advantages. Request information from a number of manufacturers to compare brands and similarly-sized models. Ask friends and other hot tub owners about their models. Ask dealers for their opinions. Which leads us to…

4. Find a reputable (and close) dealer. Your dealer is going to be your closest ally, long after you’ve made your purchase. Gather references from friends and family, and check any dealer’s standing with the Better Business Bureau. Because you’ll likely buy chemicals and other accessories from your dealer, choose someone close to home.

5. Cover your bases. Some towns require permits for installation, and, as is the case with pools, many municipalities have strict safety ordinances (fences, locking gates, locking covers, etc.) that must be followed. Check with local officials to see what needs you may have to address.

6. Narrow your choices. Once you have an idea of what’s available and a few brands you are interested in, you’ll need to narrow down your options even further. A good way to do this is to closely examine what you want. Will you use it mostly for its therapeutic benefits, or do you want something more for recreational relaxing? How many jets do you want, and what size of hot tub best fits your needs? In answering these questions, you should be able to pare you list down to a handful of worthy choices.

7. Take a soak. This is, perhaps, the most important rule of all. Once you have a few hot tub models in mind, go to a dealer and try out the different units on your list. Dealers are more than happy to let you experience the different options. Pay special attention to how comfortable the seating is. Are the jets positioned where you want them? Is there plenty of legroom? Your dealer should be on hand to answer any questions you have. But don’t worry, he won’t join you in the hot tub, and you can schedule your test soak after the showroom is closed or in a private testing room.

8. Don’t forget accessories. Today’s spas come with add-ons that make it possible to never have to get out of the water. Well, almost never. Waterproof iPod® docking stations, flat panel televisions, remote control therapy jets, collapsible steps, LED lighting. The list goes on and on. Decide what extras you want so you can customize your spa right from the start, and incorporate these accessories into your budget.

9. Save money (and the environment). Make sure your hot tub is well insulated. For models that use foam insulation, make sure its high-density. Also look for models with multi-speed pumps and those than can heat water using heat generated from the pump. Whenever the hot tub is not in use, keep it covered with a thick, insulated cover (if your model doesn’t include a cover, make sure to purchase one when you buy your spa). The more heat you can conserve and reuse, the less energy you have to consume.

10. Feel good in your skin. Today’s hot tub models come in just about any shell and cabinet color you can imagine. The majority of shells are acrylic—in multiple patterns and finishes-- though you can also find companies that use other materials, such as stainless steel. Only a few companies use wood for cabinets, but for those who still crave that natural look, maintenance-free plastic comes in numerous varieties to mimic natural wood or stone. Whether you want natural wood or maintenance-free plastic, cabinets are available for any aesthetic.

A Word of Advice

Last Season a severe snowstorm left thousands of people without power for days and some for over a week here in Pittsburgh. While you can easily light a candle to see or put your frozen pizzas outside to stay cold what do you do with your hot tub? If you are lucky enough to have a fully insulated Arctic Spa you should be ok for hopefully up to 5 days. DO NOT DRAIN YOUR SPA! This won’t help because you don’t have power to run a wet vac to suck out the lines/components. Here are some tips:

- DO NOT OPEN THE COVER

- Keep cover closed and locked (don’t want a wind gust to open it)

- Wrap the spa with tarps to keep out drafts.

- If you have a generator, but can’t run the entire spa you should put a small heater in the equipment area. Be sure that it doesn’t touch anything and keep it on low to prevent fire. If there isn’t much room in there for the heater create a little tent around the equipment area and direct the heater to blow towards the equipment.

- When you get power back and start up your spa if you hear or see anything out of the ordinary- shut the spa off as you might have some frozen lines and call Westmoreland Pools at once.

- Lastly if you do end up with penguins living in your spa and freeze damage, your homeowner’s insurance may cover the cost to fix or replace your hot tub. Look into it!

Even though swimming pools are mostly though of as enjoyment, exercise, and relaxing on hot days, they are also a great way to enhance the value of your home. If you’ve thought of selling your home or just enhancing the value, a swimming pool may very well be a wise investment.

In ground pools are a great way to add to the value of your home. They may cost a lot of money, although they come in a variety of different shapes and sizes, and they also give you the most versatility. You can choose to have a shallow end for children and those who are learning to swim, then add a deep end on the other side for diving boards and lap swimming. They are great for enjoying yourself on a hot day, or just getting out there and splashing water with your family and friends.

With the recent mild weather, many of us are looking to the future and can't wait to us eour outdoor spaces again! Outdoor furniture and outdoor accessories are available in a variety of materials: wicker, wood, fabric, aluminum, wrought iron, steel and resin. Each material requires different maintenance methods. Monthly cleaning and maintenance can help the furniture maintain a good appearance and make your investment last longer.

You can clean most outdoor furniture with soap and water. A pressure washer with 1,200 to 1,350 pounds per square inch is useful for cleaning many types of outdoor furniture, but you must use a low setting. In addition to cleaning, there are maintenance steps you can take to help your furniture last longer:

Wooden outdoor furniture that's been coated with an exterior-grade varnish can be cleaned using soapy water. Be sure to completely rinse the furniture with clean water. Wooden furniture, with the exception of teak and cedar, should be stored indoors during the winter.

Fabric outdoor furniture, such as hammocks and cloth chairs, should be machine-washed using the gentle cycle. Add bleach for white items. Hang outside to dry. To avoid shrinkage, stretch back over the frame before the fabric is completely dry. Frames should be cared for based on the material. Store fabric furniture indoors during the winter.

Umbrellas require maintenance after being in storage. Covers need washing and umbrella frame joints need oiling. Wash covers using a soft-bristled brush, mild soap and cold water. Use a spray lubricant on the joints of a wire-frame umbrella. If you have a wooden-frame umbrella, use paste wax to restore its shine.

TIP: Always follow the manufacturer's instructions when caring for your outdoor furniture. Keep the instructions in a safe place for easy access.

Acrylic cushions should be removed from the frame before cleaning. Spot-clean using a sponge, mild soap and water. Rinse with clean water. To prevent mildew, allow to dry completely before using or storing. Some types of cushions are mildew-resistant, but if you have a problem with mildew, use a solution of 1 cup of bleach, 2 cups of detergent and 1 gallon of water to clean. Mix thoroughly and spray on the entire cushion. Allow it to soak for 30 minutes. Scrub with a sponge or clean rag. Rinse with clean water and allow to dry completely. When storing, never wrap cushions in plastic. Plastic doesn't allow the cushion to breathe and can cause it to mildew if there's any moisture present.

Resin furniture requires the least amount of care. Simply spray off with clean water, and allow to air dry. If scuff marks are present, use a gentle abrasive to remove. Mildew can be removed using a mixture of 1 cup of bleach, 2 cups of detergent and 1 gallon of water.

Aluminum, wrought iron and steel frames require cleaning with water and mild soap. Many modern metal frames are rust-resistant or rust-free. If your metal furniture isn't, use paste wax or naval jelly to protect from corroding or rusting.

TIP: Wear eye protection and rubber gloves when using bleach. Use in a well-ventilated area.

Guide to Winter Hot Tub & Spa Use

Many people enjoy using their outdoor hot tub or spa during the cold winter months. There’s nothing like soaking in a warm hot tub as you sip hot cocoa and watch the snow fall around you. Follow these six tips to ensure proper operation and efficiency of your hot tub all winter long.

1. Stock up on Supplies – Make sure you have an extra filter cartridge and enough sanitizer, chemicals, test strips, and other spa supplies to last you through the winter. The weather can be unpredictable and you don’t want to take the chance of having to go out and purchase these items when the roads are icy or unmanaged.

2. Protect Your Pipes – One of the major risks of operating a hot tub in the winter is that water can freeze in the pipes. Check that your spa’s freeze protection system is activated, which will help maintain a constant water temperature even when you’re not using the spa. If your hot tub doesn’t have freeze protection, set your timer switch to cycle on for 15 – 20 minutes every hour to keep warm water circulating through the pipes.

3. Keep it Covered – A good insulated cover is essential for reducing the energy requirements of your hot tub during the winter. It is also recommended to use an inexpensive thermal blanket under your regular hot tub cover to help keep the heat in, reduce chemical use, and decrease moisture build-up on the cover. Be sure to spray the vinyl cover with a quality protectant to safeguard against harsh weather conditions and also remove snow before it accumulates on the cover.

4. Watch the Water Level – Check your hot tub’s water level regularly, especially if you do not use your spa every day. If the water in your spa gets too low, the pumps and heater may stop working which will cause the water to freeze.

5. Maintain the Water Temperature –The colder it gets, the longer it takes for your spa to heat up. It is less expensive and more efficient to maintain the water temperature of your hot tub on a daily basis than it is to let it get extremely cold and then reheat it when you want to use the spa. It also keeps water from freezing in the pipes and reduces chemical use.

6. Turn off Air Jets – Running the air jets in the winter uses a great amount of energy because they inject cold air into the spa water. If you do use your jets, make sure you turn them off after every use.

Hot Tubs for Hydrotherapy

Soaking in a warm bath is known to ease stress and invoke relaxation—but the warm water and massaging features of a hot tub can do even more. Hot tubs are commonly used as a method of hydrotherapy to treat a range of illnesses and injuries including arthritis, fibromyalgia, and high blood pressure. The warm water stimulates blood circulation—particularly the immune system’s white blood cells—and increases the production of endorphins (those “feel good” hormones). The combination of improved circulation and increased endorphins helps strengthen the immune system, decrease inflammation, restore injured tissue, improve well-being, and rejuvenate the body.

Because sitting in a hot tub elevates body temperature and the temperature of internal organs, most doctors recommend only 20-minute sessions. Luckily, all it takes is a matter of minutes for you to start reaping the benefits of hydrotherapy. Here’s what happens to your body as you take a relaxing soak:

After 5 minutes. Your blood pressure and pulse rates begin to drop.

After 8 – 10 minutes. The warm water increases your blood flow and circulation improves in your hands and feet, making them feel warmer.

After 12 – 15 minutes. The buoyancy effect of the water allows your muscles to relax and become more reactive to passive exercise. Your tissues are more malleable and become receptive to stretching, which encourages the release of lactic acid and other toxins from your body.

After 15 – 20 minutes. By eliminating the effect of gravity, pressure is removed from the joints, and stress on the supporting muscles and ligaments is lessened. Your aches and pains begin to decrease in severity.

Pleatco Crowns the 2011 Perfect Pool Guy and Gal

Pleatco, LLC, a leading manufacturer of pool and spa filter cartridges, announced the winners of the 4^th Annual Pleatco Perfect Pool Guy/Gal contest at the International Pool | Spa | Patio Expo (IPSPE) in Vegas on Nov. 2, 2011.

The contest is an innovative way to honor the hardworking men and women of the pool service industry. With over 200 contestants, this year’s entrants were as impressive as ever. This year’s Perfect Pool Guy and Gal winners are Gil Serrano of Bay Area Pool Service in Florida, and Jennifer Angevine of Gold Coast Swimming Pools in New York.

"From all of us here at Pleatco, thank you to everyone who entered, nominated, and voted," said Howard Smith, Pleatco's CEO. "We have been truly overwhelmed by the quality of the hundreds of nominated entrants and the thousands of votes cast. The entries were extremely powerful and heartfelt across the board."

“Over the four years that Pleatco has sponsored this contest, we’ve learned that being a professional pool or spa service technician is more than a job—it’s a passion. Many homeowners treat their service guy or gal like family; it’s a special relationship," said Pleatco’s COO, John Antretter. Gil Serrano has become the go-to “service master” over the past 14 years and now trains and re-trains pool service technicians in industry best practices. Humble through the entire competition, Serrano was shocked to learn how many people supported and rallied for him through voting and calling as references during the Perfect Pool Guy Contest. His long-time local title as “the pool whisperer” is also well-earned. Regarding the pool and spa industry, Serrano says he is “full of excitement to be part of this industry… It is all about the heart you put into it.”

Jennifer Angevine has owned Gold Coast Swimming Pools for nearly 10 years and has been in the industry since she was old enough to accompany her father on service calls. Every member of the Gold Coast team expressed great pride in working for Angevine and could not brag enough about their boss who goes above and beyond for clients and her team every day of the year. In regards to winning the 2011 Perfect Pool Gal title, Angevine “couldn’t be more proud to be a part of the contest and to hold the title of the year.” She gracefully acknowledges that she wouldn’t be where she is today without the encouragement and enthusiasm from her team and the true support of her father.

Special Awards

With so many worthy entrants, Pleatco once again expanded the contest and created additional awards. "During our final interviews, we were impressed with the caliber of so many individuals that we felt it was proper to recognize the outstanding achievements of several other entrants,” says Antretter. Swimming Pool Pet Safety

Swimming pools can be great exercise for dogs, or your pet turtle. But what pool safety measures should be put in place to protect animals from accidental drowning in pools? The focus of this article is how to keep your pet safe around water. This brings to mind the pet dog, and If you own a cat, this author assumes that keeping him or her out of the pool is easy, however noted that accidents do occur. Scared cats have been known to throw themselves into the pool, to escape the dog, for example.

We did an earlier post last year about Dog CPR. If you are a pet owner, this could be a skill worth having! But a better skill to have is teaching your pet the escape route, or how to get out of the pool.

Below is a short video of a dog falling into the pool, with natural dog curiosity. The person helping the dog is not really helping the dog at all. The correct training, would be to lightly grab the dogs collar, and guide them to the steps in the background. If your dog (or cat) doesn't mind being in the pool, train your dog to look for and swim to the steps or loveseat, assuming you have such in your pool.

You may have a dog that is very fearful of the pool water, and won't even come in with you for a swim on a hot summer day! If this dog has never been trained to swim to the steps, you may want to watch this video of showing how to gently introduce your dog to the pool and show them the exit steps or swimout area.

Now maybe you have a dog that loves being in the pool water, and you can't keep him out of the water! Good for keeping a clean dog, but now you have to clean the filter much more often. I had a customer in Great Falls, Va who maintained her pool specifically for her dogs. They all loved the water, and she would hold dog pool parties for her dog owner friends. And I had to clean up the pool, and pull clumps of dog hair out of the pump basket! At least the pool was being used, unlike so many other pools we took care of. Chances are, your dog is a bit timid of the pool, or has not had much experience with swimming at all.

If your pool does not have steps or a swimout / loveseat, you may be interested to know about the Skamper Ramp. All sorts of creatures can find their way into your pool while you are not watching. Most of these episodes happen while everyone is sleeping. You won't be having any "morning surprises" in you pool or skimmer basket with a Skamper Ramp. A new product this year for us are DoggyDocks, a larger ramp that can handle heavy dogs and lots of use. These may be more suitable to the boat dock or a lake dock, but can also work nicely on your pool. Either the Skamper Ramp or the DoggyDocks will give dogs, raccoons, squirrels, cats and even very small critters like field mice and chipmunks an exit ramp out of the pool.

For smaller critters like chipmunks, mice, frogs, you don't need the larger ramp. For the little guys, we have the FrogLog! The Froglog is a swimming pool escape ramp for frogs, toads, lizards, mice, chipmunks, squirrels, ducklings, turtles, bugs or insects, and other small animals up to one pound. For dogs that spend a lot of time in the water, or for dogs that don't swim well, or for older dogs who may tire easily, the doggie life vest is here! Spa Products Change

Many customer have come in recently and noticed that the names of many of our spa chemicals have changed. With our recent seperation from Arctic Spas, we have changed the names of our spa chemicals to be more consistent with the other products in our store. They are the same products from the same manufacturer right here in Pennsylvania. They just have different names. In order to help with some of the confusion, here are the more popular items and thier new names.

Swimming Pool Waterfalls

A lot of swimming pools these days are now featuring waterfalls along the edges to create a much more enticing visual appeal. These types of waterfalls are built so the water falls down into the swimming pool, creating a continuous and never ending water flow with the pool. Sometimes, there are small bulbs placed around the pool, helping to give the water a glittery effect once the water from the waterfall makes contact with the water in the pool.

Swimming pools that feature waterfalls are thought of as being more of a status symbol. Normally, waterfalls can be found in the bigger hotels and resorts, and sometimes in big mansions if the owners can afford them. There are other locations, such as popular water attractions and theme parks that have them as well.

Waterfalls also provide a great attraction for little kids, as they like to play in the water as it goes up and over their heads – then comes down on top of them. Depending on the size of the swimming pool, there can be several waterfalls attached. Most often times, swimming pools that have multiple waterfalls can be found with exquisite resorts and the most popular of water parks.

These days however, waterfalls are becoming more and more affordable, and can be found with many private swimming pools. You can also find smaller swimming pools that have smaller waterfalls constructed along the walls of the pool. You’ll also need to treat and clean the water going into the waterfall on a regular basis, as it can easily build up moss and algae if you don’t.

Every year the American Society of Landscape Architects surveys residential landscape professionals to rank the relative popularity of a wide variety of design features to be included in outdoor living spaces. This year, lighting, firepits, and areas for sitting and dining were expected to be the most sought-after enhancements for outdoor spaces.

Lighting (96.2%)

Winterized Swimming Pool Maintenance

The majority of swimming pool owners would prefer to ignore their dormant swimming pool in their backyard until spring rolls around and you begin to think about taken a dip again. The winterized swimming pool will benefit from some simple and minor maintenance. Winter upkeep can ensure the pool plumbing, the pool equipment, and even the pool cover stay in good condition and will remain undamaged for years to come. Here are some “do’s” and “don’ts” when it comes to keeping an eye on your swimming pool during the winter months that are already upon us.

Water Chemistry

When it comes time to close down the swimming pool most professional pool companies will balance the water chemistry. PH, alkalinity, calcium, cyanuric acid, and sanitizer levels should be within the proper parameters. The style of cover being used will dictate the water level and also what, if any, additional chemicals will be added. A completely solid cover that doesn’t allow sunlight or water to enter the pool will need far less maintenance. Algae growth is less likely during colder months with a low ambient air temperature as well as a reduction to direct sunlight exposure.Algaecide is recommended to prevent algae growth over an extended period of time. A chlorine floater may be used to slowly disperse the sanitizer throughout the body of water. You will want to avoid adding algaecide to your pool water if there is a high concentration of chlorine. A high chlorine level will destroy the active ingredients in both copper and polymer based algaecides. Stain and scale preventatives will help remedy unsightly stains and scaling buildup while the pool water sits stagnant over the winter.

Refill floating chlorine dispensers. I usually tie off a floating chlorine dispenser with kite string so I can reel it back in every now and then and refill. A completely solid pool cover may not require a floater as sunlight will not enter the pool and deplete the chlorine as well as chlorine will not escape the pool water chemical makeup.

Test water chemistry monthly with a Taylor test kit. When the temperature rises in the spring you may consider testing more frequently. The closer you get to summer time the more likely you’ll start to develop some problematic pool water.

Add algaecide as needed. The amount of phosphates and previous algae outbreak issues will dictate how frequently you will want to introduce additional algaecide.

Never super shock the pool water until you have the ability to leave some of the pool uncovered. Off-gassing can occur underneath the pool cover and lead to the early deterioration of the pool cover. If algaecide is present in the water it will be rendered useless. Never mix any algaecide or Chlorine based products.

Pool Equipment

When a pool is properly winterized all water is removed from the plumbing lines and all of the pool equipment. Although maintenance is not required a quick visual is all the inspection needed during the winter. The presence of ice or any freeze damage is an indication of an improperly winterized swimming pool. If any cracked plumbing calls for a repair you may need to set up a space heater to thaw out your work area. This is very common when a year round portable spa develops a leak. Some winter tips for around the swimming pool equipment would include…….

Make sure there is no presence of ice around any pool equipment. You may even check for any hairline cracks.

Make sure rodents have not nested in any pool equipment. Mice are known to live inside the firewall that is within swimming pool heaters

Make sure power has remained off and the pumps are not set to come on at any point the plumbing lines do not have water. You could possibly burn out a shaft seal or melt pump components.

Pool Cover

There are several ways to cover your swimming pool in the winter months. Solid tarp style cover weighted down around the pool by water bags, mesh safety covers, and even complete solid safety covers that are secured to anchors that are permanently drilled into the decking surrounding the swimming pool. As a pool owner your goal should be to remove any fall time debris that may have accumulated on the pool cover. For mesh safety covers that allow water to drain through them and into the pool water this will prevent having concentrated sediment that contains phosphates from “mucking” up your pool water. Leaves that sit on a pool cover will deteriorate and end up in your pool water. For a solid cover a large quantity of leaves can hinder the cover pump which is vital in removing standing water. Keeping the cover clean will ensure years of use and assist in springtime cleanup.

If you have snow accumulation or layers of ice on your pool cover….DO NOT TOUCH!!! Trying to adjust your pool cover with a large weight load or with ice sheaths with sharp edges can lead to damage. Ensure your cover pump is continuing to work over time and make sure any cover hardware or water bags are replaced when they are damaged. Let snow and ice melt before removing cover or attempting to lower the water. The actual water level beneath any pool cover is designed to support the extra weight provided by frigid mother-nature.

Never adjust water level or attempt to move nay style of pool cover when ice, snow, water or excessive leaves are present.

Ensure the automatic cover pump remains in good working condition and is free from obstructing debris.
